DescriptionPanbone shaft with baluster, curl, cross-hatch, and architectonic diamond patterns and stepped squares; one end terminating in a three-tine (three-prong) fork (one tine mostly broken off); the other end terminating in a keyhole-shaped saddle; fluted whale ivory wheel, detached (axle missing).The fit of the wheel in the saddle is so tight in both directions that it is difficult to conceive of it having been original to this shaft: the wheel is simply too big (both too thick and too broad), and the holes do not line up; and if attached, the wheel would not turn.
