DescriptionThe Ship ONEIDA is seen from the starboard side, all sails furled, and American flag flying from the gaff at the stern. Two men may be seen in the bow, and ten painted gun ports are painted on the hull. The water is calm, and a port may be seen to the bow of the ship on the right. It is thought to be from the Chinese School of Painting.Label TextBrothers Thomas S., Francis S., and Nathaniel Hathaway were New Bedford tea merchants in the China trade. They amassed a considerable fortune which upon their deaths passed to Nathaniel's son Horatio. Horatio Hathaway, who also spent time in China as a young man, became one of New Bedford's leading citizens during the industrial era when he sat on the boards of banks and textile mills. Thomas and Francis bought the ship Oneida, pictured above at the Whampoa anchorage up the Boca Tigris below Canton.On View
