DescriptionA whale bone resting atop an oil cask at Akutan Whaling Station. It is the casudal aspect of a cetacean skull, with soft tissues still attached. The ovoid structures are the occipital condyles. And I think (?) it is a beluga skull as they have a wide orbital crest on each side. The hole in the middle (foramen magnum) is where the spinal cord was. (Cataloging details from Michael Moore and William McClellen. 3/29/2012Background blurry due to close-up.
The Akutan Whaling Station was built in the Aleutians East Borough of Alaska by the Pacific Whaling Company in 1912, operating until 1939.
