DescriptionPhoto Album: Akutan Whaling Station, Alaska, circa 1912-1925. Front cover reads "To my dear Little Niece from the Land of Eskimos and icebergs, Alaska Love Uncle Joe". Souvenir album assembled by a shore-station whaleman and member of the crew of the chaser-boat(s) UNIMAK and/or KODIAK. Contains 11 leaves of black and white photo-mount stock, 10 black and white 3.25" x 5" snapshots corner mounted, labeled in crayon with accompanying polychrome crayon cartoons and diagrams.

Sister vessels UNIMAK and KODIAK, each 99 tons, length 100 feet, built 1912 by the MOran Shipbuilding Co., Seattle; registered St. Paul, Minnesota (official American headquarters of Alaska Whaling Co.); operated out of Akutan under a succession of entities until circa 1940. Akutan Whaling Station founded 1911 by Lars Christensen, son of Norwegian whaling financier Christen Christensen; operated by the Alaska Whaling Co. (1912-14); absorbed into William P. Schupp's North Pacific Sea Products Co. (1914) and (after 1918) Consolidated Whaling Corp. Ref: R.L. Webb, "On the Northwest", chs. 6-7.
