DescriptionCaption says "The widening of Purchase Street in 1913-1914. Three of the seven stores extending to and including the fruit store numbered 773 Purchase, now controlled by the heirs of Wright Brownell, are here seen conforming to the street's new west line. The first two ( from the left) , of these new stores occupy what was originally the Jacob S. Parker building, the remaining five, having been part of the old Concert Hall building. (view taken Nov. 15, 1913) In a meeting of aldermen held on March 31, 1913, it was voted to change the names of New Bedford Streets as follows: Fourth Street, its entire length to Purchase Street, Fifth Street, its entire length to Pleasant Street, Ashland Street from Robeson, north to Summer Street. On July 1st, 1913, the renumbering of these street commenced. The numbers on Purchase, Pleasant and Summer Streets, begin at the south and allowance has been made in Purchase and Pleasant Streets for extending them south to intersect County Street. The C.H.& H. Lawton store on the north west corner [of] Union and Purchase, formerly numbered 1 Purchase, as [sic] renumbered 741 Purchase ." Shows street under construction, with new storefronts further back from the street being built, as the street is widened. New business named Reilly Guaranteed hats on left side of photo, old business of C. J. Gidley Jewelery on right side of photo.
