DescriptionThe Tucker and Cummings' Store in 1879.This Firm (Abner R. Tucker & Charles S. Cummings), starting business at South Dartmouth in 1853, and removed to New Bedford, where, for about a year, they conducted their grocery business, in the building on the Southeast corner of Union and Front Streets, (now occupied by William Baylies) while awaiting the contruction of the Cummings' Building, into which they moved, when completed in 1860. They conitued in active business there up to 1881, when the firm name was changed to C.S. & B. Cummings (Charles S. and Benjamin Cummings). This name contiued unitl 1906 , when, upon the death of Charles S. Cummings, his son, Frank A., entered the firm and the present name of of Cummings & Cummings first appeared. In 1882, another store was added to the two seen here, and in 1906, their meat department was opened. This firm occupies the four stores numbered 98, 100, 102,and 104 William Street. Those seen in this picture reading from left to right are: Carles S. Cummings, George H. Chadwick, Ebenezer Nye, George I. Macy, George W. Parker, Frank A. Cummings, Fred Snow, Charles F. Allen and Benjamin Cummings.
