DescriptionThe annual Edgartown Yacht Club regatta is a blue-blooded sporting event with a long and diverting history. The 1951 running of the regatta depicted here featured two days of light to moderate winds and fair skies, then a final day of heavy southwest winds and many course shortenings, race cancellations, and DNFs. DOLPHIN, AVANTI and SOLUTION all figured in the money once or more. Most of the competing boats Norman Fortier photographed in this image were designed to the International or the CCA rule, which tended to produce boats with pleasing overhangs and moderate beam and freeboard. The Edgartown Yacht Club burgee flies from a marker at one end of the starting line. In a few seconds, spinnakers will blossom up and down the line.
