DescriptionStandard improved toggle harpoon, unmarked, open seam socket, cast iron head with wrought iron shaft.Provenance From personal effects of Capt. Marshall Carey Gilbert (1845-1911) who made his first whaling voyage at age 21 onboard the bark Morning Star of New Bedford, Charles E. Allen, master, 1866-1867, a right whaling voyage to Hudson Bay. His second whaling voyage was onboard the bark Rousseau of New Bedford, James Hyland, master, 1870-1875, a sperm and right whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Hyland came home sick and Gilbert advanced. His first command was the bark Platina of New Bedford, Peleg L. Sherman, master, 1879-1882, on a sperm and right whaling voyage to the Atlantic Ocean. Gilbert took command when Sherman fell ill. He also commanded the bark Platina of New Bedford, 1882-1886, on a sperm whaling and right voyage to the Atlantic Ocean. He later joined the merchant service working on coastwise steamers to the Caribbean and eastern seaboard.From personal effects of Capt.
