DescriptionSteel marlinspike, modified by the sailor-owner (Manuel de Mendonca): the top has been cut down and a wood tool handle filled to it, with a brass collar (missing). The hang hole in the handle top has a loop of twisted copper (electrical) wire through it. A tag attached reads:"ROPE SPLICING TOOL..."ProvenanceOne of the tools from the sea chest that belonged to Manuel E. de Mendonca (c1835-c1926), Azorean-born whaleship's cooper (bark Marion, 1859-63) and white cooper ashore in New Bedford (from circa 1863).
