DescriptionExtremely unusual (possibly unique) yarn winder: candlestick-type construction centerpost of rosewood around a bronze core, ornamented with three collars turned from whale ivory; surmounted by a wooden sprocket that rotates on a vertical axis, supporting eight extending-and-retracting wooden arms, each of which is fitted at one end with a turned finial post of whale ivory (2 of 8 missing); surmounted by a cup finial turned from maple; the whole mounted on a molded disc turned from mahogany, on three small brass, acorn-shaped legs. The cup finial is threaded to screw down and act as a clamping device, to hold the adjustable extending arms in place.Provenancedonors are grandchildren of Captain Albert Alexander Thomas, the maker of the scrimshaw.
