DescriptionThis starboard view of the Ship CATHERINE displays her on the starboard tack, under full sail. She is flying a pendant at the mainmast, a jack at the foremast, and the ensign off the mizzen peak. Her hull is black with a yellow sheer strip, a black and white striped jib boom, and a female figurehead with gilded decorative trail and stern boards. A ladder is depicted off the port stern, with figures visible on deck. A shore and a smaller vessel are visible off the port bow. This ship was built for Seth Russell & Company in 1810. The watercolor is an early depiction of a New Bedford-built ship and it is a rare of documentary evidence relating to the firm of Seth Russell & Co. On View
