DescriptionEbony frame and limb with brass reinforced index arm and mountings. Double reflecting; ivory vernier. Three index mirror filters and three horizon mirror filters. Double peep sight vane with pivoted cover for the index mirror. Three square filters for index mirror & 3 round filters for horizon mirror. Both horizon mirror & index arm have tangent screw adjustments. Case: Black painted keystone case with dovetailing and leather hinges. Hinges are probably a replacement as top & bottom have been inverted. Markings from previous hinges.ProvenanceCaptain George O. Baker (1835-1916) sailed on eleven voyages from the age of 13, and went on to command seven whaling voyages out of San Francisco, Dartmouth, and New Bedford between 1865-1886. On his first voyage onboard the bark George Washington of New Bedford, 1848-1851.
