DescriptionBackgammon game board; part of a backgammon set (39 pieces total) of tooled leather and wood, with vignettes of sperm whales and whaling. Board is mounted as a diptych on composition board ("masonite"), with leather stained in natural tones and embossed (hand-stamped) with four sperm whaling vignettes. The wooden frame stained to resemble ebony, with leather ornaments and copper fastenings. Hand sewn.ProvenanceArtist name also seen as "B. Pipia" or "S. Pipia". Whaling vignettes from an unidentified American source in the manner of George Gale, Gordon Grant and George Wales.
