DescriptionPanel cut as a strip to form the sides of a ditty box (oval box, kapdos, or round box), incised with views of the Churches on the Green in the city of New Haven, Connecticut. The scrimshaw is uncommonly clear and well preserved. Acquired as a single lot with (and by the same hand as) 2001.100.2288, .2289, and .2290.

Ex the collection of Raymond H. and Elizabeth de Lucia of Thornwood, N.Y.: Mr. De Lucia was a native of New Haven, an exhibit fabricator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where he was a colleague and friend of Robert Cushman Murphy and fabricated whale models for exhibition; he also photographed modern shore-whaling from Blandford, Nova Scotia, in 1971.
