DescriptionSperm whale tooth, polychrome engraved both sides. Recto: Standing female figure astride a sea-going chariot drawn by two sea-creatures with horses' heads, holding a trident that serves as the staff for a riband inscribed "AMPHI/TRITE"; Nereiad in the water alongside. Verso: Standing figure of a helmeted Columbia, her left hand resting on a USA shield, her right hand aloft, holding a USA flag that is partly draped over her right arm; spread eagle on anchor; naval cannon, cannonballs, and warship flying a broad pennant in background.
