DescriptionMahogany straightedge yardstick with mahogany tips, inlaid on one side with whale ivory stars (3) and transverse diamonds (4) to mark the half, quarters, and eighths of a yard, fastened with non-ferrous metal pins and interspersed with kite-shaped whale ivory elongated diamonds; verso inlaid with two recessed panels enclosing paper inserts with the printed inscriptions "H.H." and "1847." respectively, each framed by an inset of whale skeletal bone and covered by a rectangle of unidentified material (one missing).ProvenanceKendall Whaling Museum; NBWM
