DescriptionPolychrome engraved one side only. Top rounded; bottom tapered, with chamfered corners. Stern view of a ship, outward bound, passing a promontory with lighthouse and headlands; ship passing a lighthouse with crashing waves; sperm whaling scene, larboard profile of a ship with tryworks smoke, and three whaleboats (two under sail), a fourth being smashed by a whale; a steep, eroded headland, on which is a compound of buildings, with an island and boat under sail in the distance. Reminiscent of the layout, technique, and architecture of the (British) scrimshaw artist ---Foster.
