DescriptionPolychrome engraved both sidesby the Naval Monument Engraver. Recto: Whaling scene with whaleship hove-to and cutting-in; two whaleboats lowered, one fast to a whale spouting blood. Inscribed in a ribband below "WHALERS DELIGHT", and in a ribband above "OUR LIVES YOU TAKE FOR LUCRE SAKE." Verso: a vessel entering a harbor, passing a lighthouse flying a pennant, surmounted by a spread eagle perched on a shield with olive branches, inscribed below "BUZZARDS BAY" and in a ribband above "HOME SWEET SWEET HOME" . Indigenous stand: three pieces of sperm whale ivory turned as a baluster stem, on a circular (disc) base turned from skeletal bone; fastened with wood dowels, at least one of which is threaded and slotted.
