DescriptionThis landscape/seascape painting depicts the area at the foot of Potomska Street, New Bedford, and carried the original title "Portagee Navy Yard, Fleet." The title was changed for an exhibit in 1973 to "Quahog Fleet." There is a small wooden shack at the water's edge with several objects resting against the door. Five covered barrels are in the right front, and two wooden wheelbarrows are in front of the shack. There are beached skiffs and sailboats on the shore. One man is by the shack; another man is sitting; and two men are standing at the left. Several boats are anchored in the harbor, and land appears in distant background. Ashley used long flat strokes, with muted colors of purple and green to paint this scene. It is framed in Ashley's distinctive gold leaf, fish scale motif. On View
