DescriptionHarry Neyland, painting in a studio as a young man, c. 1911. He was an early 20th century artist who brought new visions of art to New Bedford. He became director of the Swain Free School of Design in the Fall of 1911, and remained in this position until 1930. Along with his teaching he worked in two studios, one on the island of Cuttyhunk (in Buzzards Bay ) and the other in the city of New Bedford. His seascapes, landscapes and marine scenes illustrated (local marine and whaling life) with appealling colors, staccato brush strokes, and dramatic compositions depicted new techniques from the modern schools of painting. In 2003-04 the NB Whaling Museum presented a small retrospective exhibition on the local artist, the first for more than 70 years.On View
