DescriptionRecords of five lighthouses located in Buzzards Bay off southern Massachusetts near New Bedford. Includes correspondence, diaries, and account books of Amos Crowell Baker, Jr. (1839-1911) who first served as keeper at Clark's Point Light (constructed 1799) and then fulfilled the same role (1898-1911) at Butler's Flats (erected 1898); historical sketches, plans, and notes by Baker relating to the construction of Butler's Flats Light; and biographical sketches, programs, and other materials of the Baker family. Records of Cuttyhunk Light (built 1823 on Cuttyhunk Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands at the entrance to Buzzards Bay) consist of journals (1864-1888); financial records; reports of shipwrecks and disasters (1866-1872); and correspondence, diaries, tax records, and other materials, of the keeper S. Austin Smith (1817-1889) reflecting daily activities at the lighthouse and also his life afterwards as a farmer in New Bedford, Mass. Also includes journals, account books, and other records of Clark Point, Dumpling Rock, and Palmer Island lighthouses.
