DescriptionPurchase Street. George L. Briggs Stationary was at 161 Purchase street, New Bedford, between 1898 and 1912. Boy in a suit standing next to a donkey pulling a cart. Business behind him "Blackmer's, Drugs, Trusses and Elastic Goods." This store was located at 165-167 Purchase Street between 1898 and 1912 as well, meaning the photo dates between those years. There is a poster in a window advertising Barnum & Bailey Circus in New Bedford on June 18. The circus was in town on June 18, 1903, making that the most likely year for the photograph to have been taken. The only other year that Barnum and Bailey may have been in the city on that date was 1910, as I cannot find a schedule for that year. They were in Boston on May 30 of that year, so it is possible, but 1903 is more likely. All other years have been ruled out.
