DescriptionPhotograph of Panbone (whole) polychrome engraved with a faithful, virtually full-size copy of the lithograph by Benjamin Russell (1804-1885), "Right Whaling in Behring Straits and Arctic Ocean with its Varieties" (New Bedford: H.S. Hutchinson & Co., 1871).Jaw pans "from [a] whale taken at Nantucket, jaw measured 17 feet. Formerly in basement of Nantucket Museum. Mr. W.H. Tripp boiught jaw + cut off end with some teeth (see S-325) [2001.100.621]. Sold the pan bones to Mr. [Morgan] Levine who had whaling scenes etched by Leopold Harnois in New Bedford. Mrs. [Evelyn] Kendall bought them from Mr. Levine." (Old KWM filecard note)
