DescriptionPhotograph of the south and east facade of the Charles Russell Building, the 'Sundial Building' on the corner of Union and North Water Streets. Visible signs for O'Malley's Tavern, State Fruit Co. Inc., and New Bedford Sales Co. The building was erected around 1820 by Charles and Seth Russell Jr., grandnephews of Joseph Russell III, New Bedford's founder. The sundial on the building was used by mariners to set their instruments to New Bedford time. Over time, the building has been home to food stores, a clock manufacturer, law offices, a museum, and a fruit company. After restoration from a fire, WHALE, Waterfront Historic Area League, bought and donated the building to the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Today the building serves as headquarters for the New England Steamship Foundation whose goal remains restoring the S.S. Nobska, America's last coastal steamship.On View
