DescriptionView of paper on the south wall over the mantel of the front parlor in Mary Slocum Mendell's childhood home, Purchase Street, corner of Maxfield Street, New Bedford, MA. She lived in the house until her mother's death about 1850. The scenes are Modern Italian. The home was built by Samuel Little. It is a fine example of the best residences built in New Bedford during the first half of the Nineteenth century. The stairway and doorways have often been copied by artists. Description on back signed by Harriet Mendell Hammond. She also noted that since 1866 the home has been occupied by John McCullough or his descendants. On View
