DescriptionTyped under photograph: Members of New Bedford's fine old families attend the Gam dressed in family heirlooms. Left, Mrs. Helen R. Scudder who is a member, of the Rodman and Rotch families wears her grandmother Knowles' gown of plain silk combined with imported embroidery and a bonnet tied with velvet ribbon. She is the mother of Mrs. Clifford W. Ashley, wife of the late Mr. Ashley, nationally known marine artist. In the center, Mrs. T. Wilson Williamson, daughter of the late Dr. A. Martin Pierce, wears the Wuaker bonnet, and shawl she wore in the 1922 filming of the first "Down to the Sea in Ships" which took place in New Bedford. Mrs. Henry D. Prescott wearing old lace and blue brocade, is another of the city's 400. This picture was taken on the gangway of the Lagoda a perfect one-half sized model of a whaleship, which is the center of attraction in the ship room of the Bourne Whaling Museum where the Gam was held.

Dress on the left worn by Mrs. Scudder is now in the museum collection as 1973.21.2.
