DescriptionHerreshoff 12-1/2's at the start of a Beverly Yacht Club race in 1954 off Tabor Academy. The Beverly Yacht Club has avowedly been a racing sailor's club ever since its original founding on Boston's North Shore in 1872, and Herreshoff 12½-footers have figured prominently in Marion's racing and recreational sailing story ever since 1915. When Norman Fortier took this photograph in 1954, some 45 of the gaff-rigged sloops were still on the Beverly Yacht Club roster, and a forest of archaic Marconi towers still dominated Sippican Harbor's western skyline.
