DescriptionBased on James Michener's best seller, "Hawaii" tells a powerful story: the arrival of the first missionaries to Hawaii in 1820. They came to bring God, but instead brought disease and destruction. Max Von Sydow plays religious tyrant Rev. Abner Hale, Julie Andrews is his gentle wife Jerusha and Richard Harris is the hot-tempered sea captain she once loved. The top supporting cast included Gene Hackman, Carroll O'Connor and Jocelyne La Garde, a Tahitian nonprofessional whose vivid performance as Queen Malama earned her an Oscar nomination. The film glows with humor (when Abner warns against adultery, the Hawaiins ask which kind--they have 23!). It surges with the excitement of windstorms, firestorms, shark attacks and more. And it shimmers with the beauty of an island paradise. "Hawaii" -- every minute of it -- is an epic triumph.
