DescriptionAl Sowle (A. S.) Tripp sitting outside shack smoking a pipe. Known as "Al Sowle", he spent more that a half-century on and around the New Bedford waterfront. At the age of 18 he opened a fish market on Nonquitt wharf, after 2 years he went on to have an oyster market open for 5 years. At that time he open a boat-letting business which he ran in various locations for the rest of his life. He saw whaling at its height, the decline of that industry and many other changes that happened during that period. He died October 6, 1913, at the age of 79.On View
