DescriptionManuel Goulart as an adult. Born in Fayal, Azores, Manuel and his brother José experimented with photography as young men. Manuel emigrated to New Bedford in 1889, and soon opened a photography studio. José followed in a few years to study it further, returning to the Azores and opening his own studio. Both brothers specialized in fine portrait photography, while taking scenic views as well. Their grandchildren preserved the two photographic collections, making it possible for the study and enjoyment of their works; and for the NB Whaling Museum to mount an exhibition in 1996 of those works. The historic context and importance of their collections shows a connection between the Azores and America, and exemplifies Manuel's life as it relates to Portuguese immigration to New Bedford. There is a book, "Two Brothers Goulart, Photography in New Bedford and the Azores" " Dois Irmãos Goulart, Fotografia em New Bedford e nos Açores" , a catalogue which accompanied the exhibition.
