DescriptionBuilt in Wareham, Massachusetts, in 1917, the 64½ - foot passenger ferry ALERT, which ran between New Bedford and Cuttyhunk on a seasonally adjusted schedule, was the island's principal link with the mainland for decades. There were few passengers aboard as she made her way across the bay on this very gray day in 1954, but at least one passenger took advantage of the occasion to read a book.On View
