DescriptionTonging for quahogs in the basin at South Wharf, Padanaram, 1948. Taken off-season very early in Norman Fortier's career, this image not only captures a timeless fog-shrouded scene, but documents South Wharf as it appeared in the immediate postwar period, before a burgeoning new generation of yachts and small crafts began crowding into the basin from early spring until late fall. The basin has been off-limits to shellfishing for decades. On View
