DescriptionHenry P. Willis, who was described in the 1890 New Bedford City Directory as a “salesman,” took this photograph of Parker’s Wharf at the foot of Middle Street, from the upper floors of the William F. Nye oil factory on Fish Island. The photo shows a schooner (as yet unidentified) off-loading bricks onto low-slung carts and a water supply boat in the foreground. At right is seen Josiah G. Childs & Son (Augustine F. Childs) wholesale fish dealer and Walter G. Viall’s wholesale provisions warehouse. The large building at center is Parker’s Block. The merchant and whaling agent John Avery Parker (1769-1853) had his counting rooms in this building as early as 1836. The site is near the present-day location of Crystal Ice, Inc. Also seen in this photo is the shop of David L. Hathaway, carpenter and builder. His shop was located on what was then known as "Bridge Square," a wide intersection at the terminus of the bridge.On View
