DescriptionTwo men stand side-by-side on the larboard side looming forward on the deck of a whale ship. Inscribed on verso: "Joseph A. Lima, oldest whalebone handler and scraper in New Bedford (on the right)", The man on the left is Azorean immigrant Peter Black (1828-1915) who joined the U.S. Navy in the 1840s and rose to become one of the finest master riggers in the service. Black opened a rigging loft in New Bedford in the 1880s. Joseph A. Lima was also a shipkeeper, or watchman.On View
