DescriptionQuaker gentleman wearing beaver hat. This sitter has been potentially identified as Benjamin Tucker in 2011, and potentially as Hingham clock maker Joshua Wilder in 2013. Curators in 2025 have determined that it is not Joshua Wilder. Possible same sitter as 1985.33. The interior of the case has a scrap of paper that appears to be a piece of the Edgar Allen Poe story "Never Bet the Devil Your Head." Very little is visible, but some of it reads, "done by Toby D--," "that he was a brag--," "this, I had reason," "offered to bet the," and "[beginning of paragraph] I was a..." This Poe story offers a terminus post quem of 1841, when the story was published.Exhibition History"Sitting in New Bedford" (NBWM, May 20, 2011 - January 7, 2013)
