DescriptionPortrait of James E. Reed, New Bedford's first well-known and successful black photographer. From 1895 to 1914 Reed had a successful portrait studio on Purchase St. Widening of the street in 1914 resulted in the building's demolition. Rather than resume in a new location, he became the first Photostat Operator for the Massachusetts State Archives, a position he held until retirement.ProvenanceJames E.
