DescriptionThis spoon was made by New Bedford silversmith Benjamin Dexter (1817-1879) for Alexander Whelden (1819-1885) and wife Clara [Kingman] Whelden (1836-1881). Alexander was a whaling captain, and Clara accompanied him on voyages at sea. When not at sea, the two lived in Dartmouth, MA. The spoon is monogrammed "W" for Whelden, is 1 of 7, and is stamped "Pure coin." For more Whelden silver, see also 2023.17.1-7; 2023.17.2.1-12.
