Description"Mother" plans marked, "L. H. Gifford." Leander H. Taber, born in Tiverton, RI worked in New Bedford, making planes from 1838 to 1852 in conjunction with John M. Taber (relationship not known). Mother planes are ones that were used to produce the working planes. They are like photographic negatives, having the reverse profile of the working plane. Mother planes are rare. This example is missing its blade.
