DescriptionLarge wooden mortar and large rock pestle. The label reads "This mortar and pestle belonged to the Curtis family of Rhode Island and was used by several generations for grinding coffee and spices for household use. Elizabeth Curtis who died in 1900 recieved it from her mother-- the mortar and pestle being part of a marriage dower to each child in each generation bearing the name Elizabeth. Elizabeth Curtis was the mother of George D. Barnard who was born in New Bedford. Mr. Barnard presented the statue in Button Wood Park to the city of New Bedford in 1914. Mrs. George D. Barnard presents the mortar and pestle to the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and Whaling Museum October 24th, 1923. To the best of her belief this article is at least 100 years old." On View
