DescriptionBlack wooden knife box, leather casing, non-ferrous handle on top, clasp/lock on box is ferrous. Top folds over, slots for 24 knives/utensils. Inside of top has red felt, around felt is a design on pasteboard of pink,blue, orange and tan flowers on a greenish background.Contains 10 forks with horn handles, 2 of the forks are stuck inside the box. Also contains two knives with horn handles. Engraving on knives says W(drawing of crown)R E.Haslehurst. The bottom of the knife box is broken. Utensils made of ferrous metal. Edward Haslehurst was born in about 1808 and seems to have started a promising career as a table knife manufacturer in Sheffield, England, the center of British cutlery manufacture. He was first listed in 1834 at 23 Arundel Street. In 1837, Edward Haslehurst & Co was a merchant at Washington Place, Wellington Street, selling table knives and dealing in ivory, stag, and horn. The Sheffield Independent, 24 August 1839, noted the death in Southport of Edward Haslehurst, table knife manufacturer, Washington Works, on 16 August 1839. He was aged only 31.
