Description"Josephine" [Bonaparte]. Bust portrait engraved by John Chester Buttre, circa the 1850s; copied from an engraving by Tony Goutiere (1808-1890), done in 1838 after an ivory miniature by Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1797-1865), painted circa 1806 and said to depict Josephine at Strasbourg, which she visited with Napoleon in 1805. The image is the original for the scrimshaw sperm whale tooth 2001.100.1671.On View
