DescriptionButton, walrus ivory. Lathe-turned with a central stud on the underside, drilled for sewing to garmet. Inupiaq, Alaska. Note: most of the clothing commissioned by or otherwise made for the Sherman family was produced by Alaska Inupiaq and Gwich'n artisans who came to Herschel Island specifically for the trade; and most of the buttons were brass, embossed with the names of San Francisco public works institutions.ProvenanceObjects associated with Captain Albert C. Sherman, his wife Carrie, son Albert Jr. ("Bertie") and daughter Helen. The family brought back souvenirs from a Western Arctic wintering-over voyage of 1895-1897. The donor is the granddaughter of Helen Herschel Paul (nee Sherman), who was born on Herschel Island in 1895.On View
