DescriptionA pencil drawing of two views of a gray whale's pelvic bones.ProvenanceBruce W. Nelson was commissioned by the Kodiak Whale project to produce these gray whale drawings in a similar fashion to the whale drawings in his book "Osteographie Des Cetaces" which did not include the gray whale. It is the first time a collection of gray whale bone drawings has been produced. To accomplish this, Mr. Nelson studied the rearticulated gray whale here in Kodiak and whale bones at the Smithsonian Institute and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The collection has aesthetic, historic and ecucational value and should be valued at no less than twenty-five thousand ($25,000) dollars. After viewing each image in the collection; and after collaborating with Stacy Studebaker and Mr. Nelson on the process and scope of the entire Kodiak Gray Whale Project: and after twenty-seven years of selling and appraising (for collection and insurance purposes) Kodiak and Alaska art and artifacts I believe this to be a fair value.
