DescriptionA bas-relief memorial tablet for the Seabury family and signed upper right: Christian Petersen, Sculptor. Inscribed with this text: "In Memory of William Seabury, his sons, Otis, Edward, William, Humphrey, Charles and Jason, and his son-in-law, Benjamin Cushman, a race of seafaring men - This tablet placed 1924 by Annie Seabury Wood." In The Old Dartmouth Historical Sketches, no. 53 (1924), a description of the Bourne Building includes this text: "The main floor of the Bourne Building contains many exhibits pertaining to whaling besides the Lagoda and the whaleboat ... objects of special interest are the bust and memorial tablet of Jonathan Bourne, and a beautiful green bust tablet, with a bas relief of a whaler under full sail, placed by Annie Seabury Wood in memory of her sea-faring ancestors." Annie Seabury Wood (1858-1923) was the wife of long-time, early ODHS curator Frank Wood (1851-1933). This tablet was placed in the Bourne Building after her death. Ten years later, the ANNIE SEABURY WOOD MEMORIAL HALL opened in 1934, funded with an estate gift from husband Frank Wood after his death. ProvenanceGift of Annie Seabury Wood
