DescriptionSampler by Sarah Lawton Wood, daughter of Josiah and Philadelphia Wood. The unusual element of Sarah's sampler is her inclusion of stitched vowels, 'aeiou', plus 'w' and 'y' at the end of the third alphabet. Her verse appears frequently in nineteenth-century religious literature.ProvenanceSarah Lawton Wood was the daughter of Josiah (1774-1849) and Philadelphia Thomas Wood. Josiah was the maker and seller of watches and clocks, silver spoons, gold necklaces, and other silverplated articles. Six of his tallcase clocks survive. In 1841 Sarah married John George W. Pope, a dry good merchant of New Bedford, MA.On View
