DescriptionThis sofa is said to have been purchased by by Mr. Crapo at Bourne's Auction Rooms about 1875 (formerly in the cabin of a whaleship being dismantled). This was likely William Wallace Crapo (1830-1893). This is an extremely rare example of a sofa that was once a built-in piece of furniture in a whaling vessel, although shipbuilders often included sofas in captains' cabins, as discussed by Elizabeth Meier in the thesis, "Respectability at Sea: Captains' Cabins on Maine-Built Merchant Ships, 1875-1900" (University of Delaware MA thesis, 2017). ProvenancePurchased by Mr. Crapo at Bourne's Auction Rooms about 1875 (formerly in the cabin of a whaleship being dismantled). Possibly 00.49.39.
