DescriptionShort stabbing spear with a broad blade. Brought home by Capt. M [arshall] C. Gilbert on the Bark Platina. Stains on spear are supposed to be blood. Currently numbered 00.200.839ProvenanceReceipt 70. The assegai was first introduced by the great Zulu King Shaka in the early 1800's. Before the stabbing spear the Zulu only used throwing spears, which are longer and thinner. The broader blade of the short stabbing spear is more effective in close combat, which Shaka introduced.
