DescriptionA wooden top overlaid with a green velvet pincushion; a wooden bottom; a panbone sides and skirt. The skirt is scalloped along the gunwale and the sides are incised on all outside surfaces. The sides are decorated with a leafy branch with flowers; a house with trees; a large rose with leaves; crossed cornucopia with flowers; a heart with arrows and a spatulate South Pacific war club or a speaking trumpet or horn. There is a larboard bow quarter view of a full-rigged ship undersail with a pennant at the main; six rat-tails of an original seven on the sides, snf two more on the skirt. Pasted onto the inside of the lid is a colored wood engraving of a man with a sack over his shoulder wielding a stick at a billygoat, evidently having lost his top-hat (lying alongside) in the fracas. The architecture, cornucopia motifs, straight-line borders, configuration of metal fastenings, and other stylistic features identify this as by the same hand as 1959.8.7.Label TextMaker once known, sewing box, 1830-40s.
