DescriptionAccount book kept by Daniel Sanford of Westport (Massachusetts) during the years 1803 to 1806 relating to his business dealings. Sanford was a ship owner, merchant, and dealer in naval supplies. Entries include references to the sale of rum, lumber (white oak, white birch, pine, hemlock, chestnut), ship timber (masts, bowspirits, "sticks", catheads, windlass bits) molasses, tobacco, cartage, corn, hay, iron, codfish, cider, apples, and shingles. Sanford also mentions plowing with oxen in several entries. The lumber referenced in Sanford's daybook came principally from an area named Brightman's Swamp located somewhere along the Westport River. Sanford also owned a sloop named Columbia and there are entries in the daybook that relate to this vessel. There are also Sanford family genealogy notes mostly related to David and his son, John, recorded in the volume. On View
