DescriptionTwo-piece whale ivory construction: octagonal pistol-grip handle, inlaid on four faces with tortoise shell (a long triangle-and-dot motif on each); baleen separator; foreshaft divides to a plain saddle, terminates in a four-tine fork; fluted whale ivory wheel; non-ferrous metal axle. Significant warping to the tines; ancient parasite (larvae) damage to the baleen; adjacent damage to tortoise shell appears to be from the larvae intrusion but, as tortoise shell is theoretically not susceptible, the damage is more liklely chipping. On View
